Cross Institutional Study
What is Cross Institutional Study?
Cross Institutional Study refers to the undertaking of a subject or subjects at a university other than the university where you are doing your degree. In the case of UOW students, this would be study at any other university. Cross institutional study is limited to a maximum number of credit points. Check your course handbook to find specific information.
What approvals are needed?
You need to get approval from BOTH Universities to undertake Cross Institutional Study. You should obtain approval BEFORE studying the subject. Students in their final session of study are STRONGLY ADVISED to check with the institution when marks are formally declared for their subject. You will not be able to graduate until these results have been issued by the institution concerned.
How much does it cost?
In most cases, the HECs fee is simply transferred from one university to the host university. Charles Study University charges an up-front fee and some other universities charge for summer session subjects. Students should check before proceeding.
Which subjects can I study this way?
Generally, electives can be studied as Cross Institutional Study subjects. Some compulsory subjects may also be approved if there is a particular reason that you need to study in the way. However, permission will not be given to study compulsory 300 level subjects at another university.
How will these subjects appear on my Record?
Cross Institutional Study will appear in one of two ways:
As specified credit: where you have found a subject that is substantially the same as a Wollongong subject and you seek approval from the Faculty to have it listed on your record as counting for the subject.
As unspecified credit: where there is no similar subject at Wollongong or you are happy for it to just appear as credit, but not detailed on you record.
Although subjects taken cross-institutionally will appear on your UOW transcript, the mark will not. You will receive a transcript from the institution concerned which records your mark.
Steps:
- Surf the Net to find a university and a subject that interests you, that fits with you program of study and for which you have the prerequisites. Other universities you might try are University of New England (www.une.edu.au); University of South Australia (www.unisa.edu.au); Southern Cross University (www.scu.edu.au)
- Find out the procedure that the host university uses, what form is needed, closing date for applications, information they require – you may need to phone to get this information.

- A current printout of your results (obtainable from SOLS)
