Graduate Education @ Batemans Bay
Thinking about becoming a teacher?
Do you want to guide children in their formative years, building the foundations for their future success? Have you ever thought of working to help shape the educational future of the country? Maybe live and work overseas? Studying education at the University of Wollongong gives you the opportunity to do all this and more.
There are two main ways to qualify as a primary or secondary teacher:
>> A four year specialist undergraduate degree, such as a Bachelor of Education
>> A three year generalist undergraduate degree (with subjects suitable for teaching) plus a one or two year postgraduate course, such as a one year Graduate Diploma of Education.
Secondary school teachers teach one or more subjects to students in Year 7 to Year 12. These subjects are broadly grouped into the following eight key learning areas:
>> English >> Mathematics >> Science >> Human society and its environment >> Languages other than English >> Technological and applied studies >> Creative arts >> Personal development, health and physical education.
Primary school teachers are trained to teach across six key learning areas:
>> English >> Mathematics >> Human society and its environment >> Science and technology >> Creative and practical arts >> Personal development, health and physical education.
With specialist training you can work in areas such as special education, English as a second language, vocational education, teacher librarianship, careers education and school counselling.
Teacher Training @ Batemans Bay
At Batemans Bay Education Centre you can complete a three year Bachelor of Arts or Commerce program which fulfills the requirements for primary teaching and some secondary teaching subjects. Upon completion of an undergraduate degree you can complete a one-year Graduate Diploma in Education, Primary or Secondary at Batemans Bay Education Centre. The Graduate Diploma may be completed as one year full time or two year part time.
The Graduate Diploma in Education is a professional one-year postgraduate teacher education program. It is course for University graduates who seek recognised teacher qualifications in primary school teaching. It also serves as an introduction to the disciplines of education for those who may wish to pursue higher studies in the field.
If you have a degree from another institution, you may be eligible to complete the Graduate Diploma in Education if your degree meets the requirements.
Full time or part time?
The course is one year full-time, or two years part-time, over an extended academic year from mid-January to mid-November.
Primary Teaching
The program involves lectures, seminars, tutorials, individual assignments, group exercises and blocks of supervised practice teaching in schools.. Teaching practice and experience are provided in collaboration with local schools. The program provides a teaching qualification that is recognised by the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET) the Catholic Education Office, independent primary schools and employing authorities in other states a. It is also accepted internationally.
Secondary Teaching
Secondary school teachers teach one or more subjects to students in Year 7 to Year 12. At the secondary, level along with the study of core education subjects, the teaching subjects known as methods will be available in a number of subject areas.
Methods offered are dependent on the number of applicants, and not all methods are available.
Overseas Professional Experience
Students in the program have the option of completing part of their professional experience overseas. The overseas experience parallels and earns the same credit towards the Graduate Diploma as the three-week local professional experience. The time overseas offers an illuminating professional experience that is both different from and yet relevant to teaching in Australia. In addition, through contacts with teachers and students, there is the opportunity for a much more meaningful interaction with a different culture than is available to most overseas visitors.
NOTE: A limited number of places are available for overseas Professional Experience. Click here to find out more.
